The Hardwick - Elizabethan Conservatory

Hardwick Hall in Derbyshire is a 16th-century 'Prodigy House' designed by Robert Smythson for Bess of Hardwick - Elizabethan England's second most powerful and wealthy woman. Hardwick is recognised as being one of Britain's greatest Elizabethan stately homes.

Many houses built in the 16th and 17th century were designed with timber or stone mullion windows fitted with metal casements made mainly from bronze or steel. Inspired by this period of architecture, we have designed a conservatory which incorporates much of the fine detailing of the time but which will equally lend itself to many houses built through to the present day.

The conservatory framework is built with delicately moulded mullions and period style corner columns. Within this sit our beautiful handmade architectural bronze casements and side opening windows, fitted with either plain or leaded double glazed units. All ironmongery is bronze. The roof and fine glazing rafters are clad internally with complementary period mouldings, inverted finials and cornice. The Hardwick conservatory also offers a choice of finials, ridge cresting and plain or castellated gutter.

The Hardwick conservatory is available in three basic formats - bay, hipped and lean-to, with the hipped conservatory in variable widths. Each of these formats is flexible to suit your space requirements.

Whilst each conservatory comes with a set number of doors, windows and roof vents these can be increased or decreased as necessary. Similarly, we are able to make certain modifications to the basic formats to accommodate less straightforward sites. Breakfronts and gables can also be convered within a National Trust conservatory scheme.

Each option will come with a choice of window designs, ridge and eaves detail. Our designers can help in advising you on the style and detail best suited to the aesthetics of your home.
