The Cragside - Victorian Conservatory

Cragside House in Northumberland is a fine example of Victorian architecture. The creation of the 1st Lord Armstrong, great inventor and engineer, it is looked upon as being the most technologically advanced home of its time. Inside and out, the detailing is exquisite and diverse in styling. During the Victorian era, a great number of historical periods and their styles were popular simultaneously, and all were freely interpreted and mixed.

Vale's Cragside conservatory has delicate framework punctuated by striking columns. The door and window designs can be created using traditional timber methods incorporating 26mm glaze bars and individual double glazed units. Alternatively, as popular with the Victorians, decoration is created by means of a metal tracery sitting to the exterior of the glass.

The bay conservatory incorporates decorative scroll support castings whilst the hip and lean-to conservatories have an eaves cornice. Externally, the deep head section can either have a pencil mould and stop chamfer or be decorated with lozenge motifs. All opening windows are top hung. Finials, crestings and timber mouldings throughout the conservatory reflect the period.

The Cragside conservatory is available in three basic formats - bay, hipped and lean-to, with the hipped conservatory in variable widths. Each of these formats is flexible to suit your space requirements.

Whilst each conservatory comes with a set number of doors, windows and roof vents these can be increased or decreased as necessary. Similarly, we are able to make certain modifications to the basic formats to accommodate less straightforward sites. Breakfronts and gables can also be convered within a National Trust conservatory scheme.

Each option will come with a choice of window designs, ridge and eaves detail. Our designers can help in advising you on the style and detail best suited to the aesthetics of your home.
